In this video I talk about what NOT TO DO when a debt collector contacts you. If you don’t know what action you should or shouldn’t take, you could end up paying a debt that you legally do not have to pay.
When you’re contacted by a debt collector, do not do any of the following things:
1. Do not acknowledge that you owe the debt. There are several reasons why you should not acknowledge that you owe the debt. The debt could be past the statute of limitations and you may be no longer legally responsible for the debt. Also, If the debt collector can not provide proper validation of the debt, you don’t have to pay them and debt collectors almost never have proper documentation to validate the debt.
2. Do not make any partial payments on the debt. If the debt is past the statute of limitations and you make a partial payment then you will reinstate the debt. Demand validation before you pay anything because you may not be liable for the debt.
3. Do not give the debt collector any of your financial information when you speak with the debt collector. The debt collector is likely to offer you a limited time deal to pay the debt at a fraction of what is owed. Don’ t fall for the limited time offer trick. Once you pay towards the debt, you will be liable for the debt.
